5 Myths About Tarot Readers, Debunked

Remember when your Aunt Karen told you the woman down the street was a witch who praised Satan because she reads tarot cards? Well, actually, she’s probably just a humble woman who enjoys things like gardening, universal guidance, and self-care.

Tarot readers have a bad reputation (because society and religion deemed it so, and we all followed suit), and I’m here to tell you why you shouldn’t fear us but embrace us. Especially our practices. After all, we as humans, all want the same things in life: peace, love, and happiness.

Let’s dive into some of the biggest myths sewn into our belief system about tarot readers and uncover the truth.

Myth 1: Tarot Is "The Devil's Work"

The Truth: This is one of the most persistent and unfounded myths about tarot. In fact, my own catholic mother wants nothing to do with my business venture due to her deep rooted (fed to her by religion and society) belief that it is the devil’s work.

Despite its depiction in horror films and religion, tarot has no connection to Satan, demons, or dark forces. The imagery on the cards is symbolic and meant to reflect universal human experiences, not evil intent.

In reality, tarot is a tool for guidance, self-reflection, and understanding, far removed from anything sinister.

Myth 2: Tarot readers predict the future with 100% accuracy

The Truth:Tarot isn’t about fortune-telling, like you see in the movies. Instead, it’s a tool for insight and guidance. A reading offers potential paths and perspectives, but you always have free will to shape your destiny.

You are the only one who can control you. The cards may tell you to take a certain path, but you have the free will to choose which path to take. No one can take that away from you.

Myth 3: Tarot readers must have psychic powers

The Truth:While some tarot readers may identify as intuitive or empathic, reading tarot doesn’t require supernatural or psychic abilities. It’s a skill anyone can learn with practice, combining knowledge of the cards with human intuition, and arguably most importantly, listening and understanding.

Myth 4: Tarot is only for mystical or spiritual people

The Truth:Tarot is for everyone! You don’t need to be spiritual or mystical to benefit from a reading. Many people use tarot as a practical tool for self-reflection and problem-solving, regardless of their beliefs

Myth 5: Tarot is a scam to make money

The Truth:While there are unethical practitioners in any field, most tarot readers are passionate individuals who genuinely want to help others. They offer a service rooted in empathy, guidance, and personal growth, not exploitation.

At Tarot and Tea with Jo, our mission is to provide unique but affordable tarot readings, ensuring our practice isn't out of reach for the many. We have been encouraged to increase prices in the past, but in reality, our core is to provide a service that helps people.

Tarot is a tool for growth, clarity, and connection. The next time you hear a wild claim about tarot, take a moment to ask yourself if it’s based on fact or fear. And remember, tarot readers are just people, people who happen to have a passion for helping others live their best lives.
